Do you remember the first time your mouth was washed out with soap? If you are like me you remember the 20th time it was washed out LOL. When I was growing up I had a disease (foot and mouth disease) every time I opened my mouth I stuck my foot in it. Whatever came up came out. Unfortunately a lot of what came up was negative, critical - foul language. I guess a lot of that had to do with the company I was keeping. Those around me were very critical of everyone. They always had a negative outlook on life and every other word was a curse word. This brings a whole new meaning to the saying "Your thoughts will lead to your words". Because those negative influences were always in my thoughts, my words would follow suit. The fact is our words are very powerful. They can be life-giving or life-taking; not only to others but to ourselves as well. Proverbs 18:21.
So to keep from having my mouth washed out with soap every day there were a few things I had to learn as it related to my words. The first thing was if I couldn’t say something helpful - skip it (Ephesians 4:29). It is freeing to know you don’t always have to have something to say. The second thing I learned was if I think something good say it (Proverbs 16:24). We will always create something with our words. My prayer for you today, as you go about your life, is that you would be mindful of your words knowing they can produce life or death.
P.S. Don’t bite the soap.....
